About alan

Cycling is what I love to do. I ride as often as I can, especially with my son when he’s back from university (who has already proven he’s faster than me, he once lapped me in a cyclo-cross race). Every year I head abroad with friends for a week of riding, good coffee, cake, and long chats. Last summer we went to Mallorca, which is a fantastic place to ride, and riding Sa Calobra was an unforgettable experience.

I have cycled the length of Portugal, enjoyed gravel cycling holidays in Slovenia, and tackled some of Europe’s most famous climbs including Alpe d’Huez, Galibier and Stelvio. I enjoy the buzz of riding in heavy traffic just as much as the calm and focus that comes with empty country roads.

I am a British Cycling qualified cycle coach and hold a British Cycling leadership qualification. As a coach, I spent time helping under 18 riders improve their cycling ability, which I found hugely rewarding, and several of those riders have since gone on to become extremely strong cyclists. I also volunteered with a junior race team, helping to support the team.

Through my leadership qualification, I also led a group of rugby players on a charity ride from Exeter to Twickenham, an experience that combined planning, teamwork, and making sure everyone completed the challenge safely and smiling. I have also volunteered at professional races and worked as a driver for the Race Commissaire, weaving through groups of racing cyclists, which really opened my eyes to the speed, skill, and control riders have at that level.

When the weather is not great, you will usually find me on Zwift, riding and chatting with friends from around the UK. Before focusing on bike fitting, I worked as Chief Operations Officer for a cycling events company, organising sportives around the UK and delivering corporate cycling events. I have always been someone who keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes, calm, friendly, and focused on making sure everything works as it should. I bring that same approach to bike fitting, alongside a genuine love of cycling and a real understanding of what riders need to feel comfortable and confident on their bikes.

If you want to feel more comfortable, confident, and efficient on your bike, call me to arrange a bike fit.

FAQs

What is a mobile bike fit?

A professional mobile bike fit is a service where a trained expert comes to your location to adjust and tailor your bicycle to your specific body measurements and riding style. This ensures optimal comfort, efficiency, and performance.

Why should I get a bike fit?

Getting a bike fit can significantly improve your riding experience. It helps in reducing discomfort, preventing injuries and increasing efficiency and power output. Whether you’re a casual rider or a competitive cyclist, a proper bike fit is essential for enjoying your rides to the fullest.

How long does a bike fit take?

A typical bike fit takes approximately 2.5 – 3 hours, depending on your specific needs and the adjustments required. Our goal is to ensure your bike fits you perfectly, so we take the time needed to get every detail right.

What do need for the bike fit?

Your bike, cycling shoes and your usual cycling attire. It’s important to fit you in the gear you normally ride in to ensure the adjustments are tailored to your regular riding conditions. If you have booked to have additional bikes or shoes fitted at the same time, please have them available.

Can you fit all types of bikes?

Yes, we specialise in fitting all types of bikes, including road, gravel, triathlon, TT, track and static training bikes such as Watt bike. Each type of bike has unique fitting considerations, which we are fully equipped to handle.

How do I prepare for the bike fit?

Ensure your bike is clean and in good working condition. We cannot do a bike fit on a bike which is not in good working order. If you have any specific concerns or areas of discomfort while riding, be ready to discuss them during your appointment as twe will ask you all of this.

How much space do I need for the bike fit?

You’ll need enough space to set your bike up on a turbo trainer and we’ll also have an exercise mat for you to undergo your biomechanical assessments. This is a rough area of 2 to 3 meters squared.

If you could also make sure that any valuable or precious belongings are removed from the fitting space and please ensure that any pets (or small children) are also kept away from the fitting area.

Is a mobile bike fit as effective as a studio fit?

Absolutely! Our mobile bike fit service offers the same level of expertise and precision as a studio fit. The Bike Fitters are trained to a very high standard with continuous ongoing training especially around biomechanics and complex cases. The advantage is that we bring this service directly to you, providing convenience without compromising on quality.

id match laser guided cleat fit

Our idmatch Footmeter uses a laser to quickly and accurately measure your feet. This helps us record key measurements such as foot length, foot width and metatarsal length.

The idmatch Tiltmeter is a special tool we use to check how your foot sits when you’re actually pedaling. It helps us see if your foot leans inwards or outwards (pronation or supination), which is really important for a comfortable ride.

Finally, our idmatch Cleat Fit system makes sure the part of your shoe that clips onto the pedal (the cleat) is perfectly aligned. We use a laser and cleat stencil to get this just right, so your feet feel great and you pedal efficiently

  in the saddle with alan!

At The Bike Fitters, we believe getting to know your fitter is as important as the fit itself. That’s why we put Alan in the hot seat!

Here’s what he had to say when Bike Fitters HQ threw him some questions

What’s your favourite bike and why?

My favourite bike is my Rose Xeon, even though it’s ten years old. It is just so reliable, never seems to go wrong and doesn’t have any annoying creaks or rattles.

Best ride you’ve ever been on?

Probably a charity ride over 5 days when we went through all the major cities in Scotland. About 30 people took part in it, some who had barely cycled before. It was great the way we all helped each other out to make sure that no one was left behind and we all finished the ride.

If you could cycle anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would love to visit Japan and cycle through the countryside. I also fancy cycling down the west coast of America from San Francisco to San Diego.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while on a bike?

I was new to clipless pedals and cycling through London when I stopped at some traffic lights and instantly forgot to unclip. Instead of unclipping like a functioning adult, I panicked, froze, and performed the slowest fall in history straight into a stationary bus. I remained there, fully clipped in, plastered against the side of it, while an entire bus of passengers sat at eye level watching a red faced cyclist silently battle his pedals, his balance, and his dignity. Nobody helped. Nobody looked away. Just before the lights changed I finally managed to unclip and regain my balance.

What’s your pre-ride ritual?

Not sure if it’s a ritual but when I put arm warmers on I also make sure the label is on my right arm and it is in exactly the same place for each ride.

What’s the best piece of cycling advice you’ve ever received?

The advice I always give to new riders is 1. Get a gilet. 2. Get arm warmers. 3. Eat something at least every hour. I’ve bonked a few times and it’s a very dark hole to climb out of!
