About Lee

Hello, my name is Lee and I’m very proud and excited to provide a personalised, professional mobile bike fitting service in Canterbury and across East Kent.  My love affair with cycling didn’t start well, falling off a friend’s Chopper bike when I was 12, biting the road and spending the weekend in hospital.  Not one to be deterred, that love affair has been constant throughout my life.

As with a lot of us kids back in the 70’s I messed around with bikes, home-made go-karts and spent the rest of my childhood when not on 2 or 4 wheels, either climbing trees or playing football, all with my dog Butch in tow.

Later, as a young sailor I would come home on leave and cycle with my brother,  father  and friends from the Sheffield Phoenix Cycling Club, venturing out into the Peak District and time-trialling on the Chesterfield Bypass, but long periods at sea were not conducive to breaking any 2 wheeled records or winning medals

I rode mountain bikes for many years, I’ve completed a few long-distance rides such as the Coast to Coast but then got hooked on road cycling when my Dad donated his circa 1985 JF Wilson hand-built steel tourer to me.  My local bike shop in St. Peters rebuilt it for the 2nd time in its life, not quite Trigger’s Broom but you get the gist, and off I went hurtling around the lanes of the Kent countryside where I’ve lived for just about 30 years now.  Several road bikes (and a steel gravel bike) later,  here I am hurtling around Betteshanger &  Lydden Hill tracks, or you can find me in the Kent countryside with VC Deal and cycling buddies.

For almost a decade I owned and ran, with the support of my wife Andrea, a Social Care business, and was lucky enough to take early retirement when I sold it a couple of years ago.  One of the things I learned from caring for others, and I was very much a hands-on type of owner so I can speak with experience,  was the joy people got from being able to continue to do the things that they loved, despite their impairments and limitations. Perhaps they were not able to do those things in the way that they had years ago, but if we could find a way, we would, such as taking a dementia client to the golf course to practice on the pitch and putt,  facilitating coffee mornings so clients could get together and socialise or just simply involving people in day-to-day tasks, so that they felt useful and in control.

I appreciate both the physical and well-being benefits that cycling brings to people, and cycling has given me so much joy and a sense of achievement over the years, especially when I can keep up with some ‘younger than me’ riders, complete an Audax or simply go for a pedal and a coffee with my wife.

My aim with The Bike Fitters mobile service is not to only help you become more efficient, faster, safer and less prone to injury through our precise bike fitting service,  but, through being comfortable on your bike, bring a sense of joy too through cycling, to many more riders, experienced, intermediate and new, across Kent.  My vision is for a Bike Fit from an accredited professional to be the norm when purchasing a bicycle or when physiological changes occur.  So if you are uncomfortable sat on your saddle, that knee is giving you grief, your lower back is sore, your feet are on fire, your neck is stiff and your hands are numb, give The Bike Fitters a call, it’s not the end of the road, it is just the start of your new journey into a more enjoyable, satisfying and rewarding cycling experience

FAQs

What is a mobile bike fit?

A professional mobile bike fit is a service where a trained expert comes to your location to adjust and tailor your bicycle to your specific body measurements and riding style. This ensures optimal comfort, efficiency, and performance.

Why should I get a bike fit?

Getting a bike fit can significantly improve your riding experience. It helps in reducing discomfort, preventing injuries and increasing efficiency and power output. Whether you’re a casual rider or a competitive cyclist, a proper bike fit is essential for enjoying your rides to the fullest.

How long does a bike fit take?

A typical bike fit takes approximately 2.5 – 3 hours, depending on your specific needs and the adjustments required. Our goal is to ensure your bike fits you perfectly, so we take the time needed to get every detail right.

What do need for the bike fit?

Your bike, cycling shoes and your usual cycling attire. It’s important to fit you in the gear you normally ride in to ensure the adjustments are tailored to your regular riding conditions. If you have booked to have additional bikes or shoes fitted at the same time, please have them available.

Can you fit all types of bikes?

Yes, we specialise in fitting all types of bikes, including road, gravel, triathlon, TT, track and static training bikes such as Watt bike. Each type of bike has unique fitting considerations, which we are fully equipped to handle.

How do I prepare for the bike fit?

Ensure your bike is clean and in good working condition. We cannot do a bike fit on a bike which is not in good working order. If you have any specific concerns or areas of discomfort while riding, be ready to discuss them during your appointment as twe will ask you all of this.

How much space do I need for the bike fit?

You’ll need enough space to set your bike up on a turbo trainer and we’ll also have an exercise mat for you to undergo your biomechanical assessments. This is a rough area of 2 to 3 meters squared.

If you could also make sure that any valuable or precious belongings are removed from the fitting space and please ensure that any pets (or small children) are also kept away from the fitting area.

Is a mobile bike fit as effective as a studio fit?

Absolutely! Our mobile bike fit service offers the same level of expertise and precision as a studio fit. The Bike Fitters are trained to a very high standard with continuous on going training especially around biomechanics and complex cases. The advantage is that we bring this service directly to you, providing convenience without compromising on quality.

How do I book my bike fit?

id match laser guided cleat fit

Our idmatch Footmeter uses a laser to quickly and accurately measure your feet. This helps us record key measurements such as foot length, foot width and metotarsal length.

The idmatch Tiltmeter is a special tool we use to check how your foot sits when you’re actually pedaling. It helps us see if your foot leans inwards or outwards (pronation or supination), which is really important for a comfortable ride.

Finally, our idmatch Cleat Fit system makes sure the part of your shoe that clips onto the pedal (the cleat) is perfectly aligned. We use a laser and cleat stencil to get this just right, so your feet feel great and you pedal efficiently

  in the saddle with LEE!

At The Bike Fitters, we believe getting to know your fitter is as important as the fit itself. That’s why we put Lee in the hot seat!

Here’s what he had to say when Bike Fitters HQ threw him some questions

What’s your favourite bike and why?

Cervelo S3, my current ‘go to’ bike.  It looks good (subjective),  its aero and light-ish but above all, comfy.  I can hit the track and empty myself in an hour (normally less) or do a hilly 200k Audax on the S3.  His name is Gilbert btw.

Best ride you’ve ever been on?

Tricky, I’ve done a few Coast to Coasts as part of a social group which were epic, mainly due to alcohol fuelled evenings and the scenery.  Learning to ride outdoor tracks, keep up and take turns on the front has been rewarding too but I think riding the Cantii Way, including the Winchelsea Loop, in a day was probably the most rewarding in terms of understanding what I could do, pushing beyond my perceived limits.

If you could cycle anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Despite living close to the channel I haven’t cycled in Europe yet, so I’d like to nip over to France but perhaps explore the silky smooth tarmac in Portugal at some point too.

What cycling event do you never miss watching on TV?

I don’t watch much TV but I do like to keep up to date with the Giro, Tour de France and La Vuelta via the highlight shows.   I quite like watching the track events too, the speed those riders travel at is mind boggling.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while on a bike?

Some I can’t mention here, one involves someone wearing their cycling shorts inside out and getting caught changing behind a bush, but for a more printable version, a few years ago I went over the handlebars after hitting a pot hole on Le Tour de Sandwich (it is a thing).  I was not quite concussed but it was suspected I’d broken a couple of ribs, luckily, I hadn’t  in the end but was off the bike for about 6 weeks.  Like a stubborn Yorkshireman I declined to get into the back of the support van and decided to see if I could make it to the next feed station, which I did and then carried on to complete the 62 mile event.  On the way home (yes, I rode to the start and back home), I sat on a bench, in quite some pain, wondering how on earth I was going to cycle the last 4 miles home.  An elderly couple stopped for a chat as I was trying to be brave and not wince, we talked about how far I’d been and as they walked away the gentleman said ‘oh you haven’t been too far then, you’ll be home in a jiffy’.  The next day I had dining room furniture delivered…

Who’s your cycling hero and why?

G, Beryl Burton and of course the Manx Missile,  Mark Cavendish.  They are/were all ordinary people, doing extra-ordinary things.  Being a father of 3 daughters I love to see women pushing the boundaries and beating the men at their own game;  Beryl, who was relatively unknown and still is, pushed those boundaries and then some, just a normal housewife to some, an outstanding athlete to others.   I also have to say, anyone who rides a bike regularly, for whatever reasons (apart from robbing people, looting and drug dealing), have my vote.  Every one of those people are heroes in my eyes, simply for getting off the sofa and into the great outdoors.

What’s in your repair kit that might surprise us?

Butyl inner tube 🙂   Also for quite some time, like a buffoon I carried a SRAM quick link when running Shimano chains.

What’s your pre-ride ritual?

Get my kit ready the night before, go to the loo at least twice, use the Bidet.  I always put my left shoe on first, its not superstition but from my motorcycling experience, if I have a set routine for getting ready and dressed, I’m less likely to miss something that way.

What’s the best piece of cycling advice you’ve ever received?

Get a bike fit, fuel regularly, ride within yourself unless doing a training drill or in a sprint to the finish.
