About rich

Hi, I’m Rich, a dedicated bike fitter with a lifelong passion for sport. With over 25 years of experience in health, fitness, and elite sport development, I’ve always been driven to help people perform at their best. My career has taken me around the world, including a decade in the Middle East working in National Sport Academies.

My relationship with the bike goes back further than memory (though I have some reel-to-reel footage of me first learning to ride, being chased by an anxious mum). I grew up on two wheels, mostly riding hand-me-downs from neighbours and older cousins. The excitement of a ‘new’ bike for Christmas came when mountain bikes first hit the UK in the late ’80s and kids dreamed of owning the latest Raleigh Mustang. My gift was a cheaper alternative from the local bike shop. It wasn’t a quite a Mustang, but it had chunky tyres, wide bars and lots of gears so it ticked all the essential boxes for a nine-year-old! Our bikes were for playing out on the streets, racing our mates and exploring beyond our parents’ limits. The bike was a ticket to freedom…and still is in so many ways.

Cycling has since taken me to places that I never imagined possible (both geographically and mentally). Highlights include touring New Zealand, Italy, France and of course the UK. While I really enjoy the competitive edge of Sportives and Triathlons, it’s the adventure of touring with a tent and panniers that I find most rewarding. For me, it doesn’t get any better.

Aside from cycling, I’ve been competitive in other sports, especially rugby and athletics which led me to study Physical Education and Sport Science at Leeds Carnegie. I specialised in talent identification and development and my early career coincided with the UK’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games; an inspiring time to be working with young people and coaches.

In 2013, I joined the Aspire Academy in Qatar, the national institute for sport, where I established performance pathways for talented young athletes. Working in elite environments keeps you at the forefront of science and coaching innovation. However, I’ve always believed that success starts with getting the basics right first before chasing the marginal gains. A solid foundation ultimately provides the base that supports the highest levels of performance.

Over the years, my own sporting life has evolved, and cycling, running, and rowing have become my go-to outlets for competition. Now well into in the Masters age category, I still chase performance and personal goals. But above all, I aim to stay in the game for as long as possible, enjoy the ride, and help others do the same.

As George Bernard Shaw put it: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

FAQs

What is a mobile bike fit?

A professional mobile bike fit is a service where a trained expert comes to your location to adjust and tailor your bicycle to your specific body measurements and riding style. This ensures optimal comfort, efficiency, and performance.

Why should I get a bike fit?

Getting a bike fit can significantly improve your riding experience. It helps in reducing discomfort, preventing injuries and increasing efficiency and power output. Whether you’re a casual rider or a competitive cyclist, a proper bike fit is essential for enjoying your rides to the fullest.

How long does a bike fit take?

A typical bike fit takes approximately 2.5 – 3 hours, depending on your specific needs and the adjustments required. Our goal is to ensure your bike fits you perfectly, so we take the time needed to get every detail right.

What do need for the bike fit?

Your bike, cycling shoes and your usual cycling attire. It’s important to fit you in the gear you normally ride in to ensure the adjustments are tailored to your regular riding conditions. If you have booked to have additional bikes or shoes fitted at the same time, please have them available.

Can you fit all types of bikes?

Yes, we specialise in fitting all types of bikes, including road, gravel, triathlon, TT, track and static training bikes such as Watt bike. Each type of bike has unique fitting considerations, which we are fully equipped to handle.

How do I prepare for the bike fit?

Ensure your bike is clean and in good working condition. We cannot do a bike fit on a bike which is not in good working order. If you have any specific concerns or areas of discomfort while riding, be ready to discuss them during your appointment as twe will ask you all of this.

How much space do I need for the bike fit?

You’ll need enough space to set your bike up on a turbo trainer and we’ll also have an exercise mat for you to undergo your biomechanical assessments. This is a rough area of 2 to 3 meters squared.

If you could also make sure that any valuable or precious belongings are removed from the fitting space and please ensure that any pets (or small children) are also kept away from the fitting area.

Is a mobile bike fit as effective as a studio fit?

Absolutely! Our mobile bike fit service offers the same level of expertise and precision as a studio fit. The Bike Fitters are trained to a very high standard with continuous on going training especially around biomechanics and complex cases. The advantage is that we bring this service directly to you, providing convenience without compromising on quality.

How do I book my bike fit?

id match laser guided cleat fit

Our idmatch Footmeter uses a laser to quickly and accurately measure your feet. This helps us record key measurements such as foot length, foot width and metotarsal length.

The idmatch Tiltmeter is a special tool we use to check how your foot sits when you’re actually pedaling. It helps us see if your foot leans inwards or outwards (pronation or supination), which is really important for a comfortable ride.

Finally, our idmatch Cleat Fit system makes sure the part of your shoe that clips onto the pedal (the cleat) is perfectly aligned. We use a laser and cleat stencil to get this just right, so your feet feel great and you pedal efficiently

  in the saddle with rich!

At The Bike Fitters, we believe getting to know your fitter is as important as the fit itself. That’s why we put Richard in the hot seat!

Here’s what he had to say when Bike Fitters HQ threw him some questions

What’s your favourite bike and why?

My 25 year old faithful touring bike, for all the adventures and memories. Its days are well done but I can’t part with it.

Best ride you’ve ever been on?

English coast to coast. It’s a great way to enjoy the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the best fish and chips at the end.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while on a bike?

Attempting (and failing) to conquer the world’s steepest street (Baldwin St, NZ). The onlooking tourists gave plenty of encouragement as I set off…but they knew what was about to happen. I should have taken the rear panniers off first!

Who’s your cycling hero and why?

Graeme Obree for his resilience and success against all the odds…and I just like people who think differently.

What’s the best piece of cycling advice you’ve ever received?

To carry a few spare spokes and key on the touring bike. I’ve managed a few DIY fixes to avoid being stranded.
