About gareth

My love of cycling started in my early teens. Back in the 90s my parents bought me a second hand mountain bike from a family friend. I spent my youth learning to wheelie, bunny hop and endo turn (skills I still use today) and worked multiple summer jobs to buy the latest anodised bike part.

At university I got introduced to a fringe sport called Ultimate Frisbee, which it turned out I was quite good at. I managed to go all the way to representing Great Britain, becoming the 2007 European Champions, and placing 4th at the 2008 World Championships. This is where I realised what it takes to compete at the highest level of a sport.

Bikes were always there in the background. After university I moved to London and would commute to work come rain or shine in all the seasons racking up thousands of kilometres over a 13 year period. Whilst living in London I got back into mountain biking, before being convinced to give road riding a go by signing up for the 2009 L’Étape du Tour (the Alpe d’Huez stage).

Getting ready for the Etape was where I had my first bike fit experience. For the first 6 months of my road riding career I just thought having knee pain, stiff shoulders and a sore neck was part of riding a road bike, how wrong I was. I got my set up dialled with a professional bike fitter and all those issues went away, allowing me to focus on the suffering in my legs on the Galibier and Alpe d’Huez.

The Etape started a love affair with the road as well as mountain bikes. There’s nothing I love more than heading out on my annual trip with my mates to conquer some Grand Tour cols (I just wish I was better at remembering the names of them all), or packing up my mountain bike to head up to Scotland or tackle an adventure enduro race (so far I’ve competed in Trans Provence, The Stone King Rally, Trans Madeira and Trans Atlantis). More recently I’ve gotten really into gravel riding and can often be found pedalling around my local trails in the Chilterns or at a Glorious Gravel Sportive.

Prior to joining The Bike Fitters I spent 20 years in the tech industry, where I most recently worked as a COO, fascinated with optimising efficiency and systems. When the opportunity to join The Bike Fitters presented itself it was a no brainer for me as it allows me to combine my life long passion for riding bikes and my professional passion for problem solving, optimising systems and improving efficiencies, with the satisfaction that comes from helping people get greater enjoyment from the sport we all love. Whether you’re looking for those last few watts of performance that an optimal position will unlock, or just want to feel more comfortable on a Sunday afternoon ride, I’d love to help you reach your goals.

FAQs

What is a mobile bike fit?

A professional mobile bike fit is a service where a trained expert comes to your location to adjust and tailor your bicycle to your specific body measurements and riding style. This ensures optimal comfort, efficiency, and performance.

Why should I get a bike fit?

Getting a bike fit can significantly improve your riding experience. It helps in reducing discomfort, preventing injuries and increasing efficiency and power output. Whether you’re a casual rider or a competitive cyclist, a proper bike fit is essential for enjoying your rides to the fullest.

How long does a bike fit take?

A typical bike fit takes approximately 2.5 – 3 hours, depending on your specific needs and the adjustments required. Our goal is to ensure your bike fits you perfectly, so we take the time needed to get every detail right.

What do need for the bike fit?

Your bike, cycling shoes and your usual cycling attire. It’s important to fit you in the gear you normally ride in to ensure the adjustments are tailored to your regular riding conditions. If you have booked to have additional bikes or shoes fitted at the same time, please have them available.

Can you fit all types of bikes?

Yes, we specialise in fitting all types of bikes, including road, gravel, triathlon, TT, track and static training bikes such as Watt bike. Each type of bike has unique fitting considerations, which we are fully equipped to handle.

How do I prepare for the bike fit?

Ensure your bike is clean and in good working condition. We cannot do a bike fit on a bike which is not in good working order. If you have any specific concerns or areas of discomfort while riding, be ready to discuss them during your appointment as twe will ask you all of this.

How much space do I need for the bike fit?

You’ll need enough space to set your bike up on a turbo trainer and we’ll also have an exercise mat for you to undergo your biomechanical assessments. This is a rough area of 2 to 3 meters squared.

If you could also make sure that any valuable or precious belongings are removed from the fitting space and please ensure that any pets (or small children) are also kept away from the fitting area.

Is a mobile bike fit as effective as a studio fit?

Absolutely! Our mobile bike fit service offers the same level of expertise and precision as a studio fit. The Bike Fitters are trained to a very high standard with continuous on going training especially around biomechanics and complex cases. The advantage is that we bring this service directly to you, providing convenience without compromising on quality.

How do I book my bike fit?

Booking is easy! Just click on any ‘BOOK A BIKE FIT’ button and follow the steps. You can select your day/time (availability dependant)

id match laser guided cleat fit

Our idmatch Footmeter uses a laser to quickly and accurately measure your feet. This helps us record key measurements such as foot length, foot width and metotarsal length.

The idmatch Tiltmeter is a special tool we use to check how your foot sits when you’re actually pedaling. It helps us see if your foot leans inwards or outwards (pronation or supination), which is really important for a comfortable ride.

Finally, our idmatch Cleat Fit system makes sure the part of your shoe that clips onto the pedal (the cleat) is perfectly aligned. We use a laser and cleat stencil to get this just right, so your feet feel great and you pedal efficiently

  in the saddle with gareth!

At The Bike Fitters, we believe getting to know your fitter is as important as the fit itself. That’s why we put Gareth in the hot seat!

Here’s what he had to say when Bike Fitters HQ threw him some questions

What’s your favourite bike and why?

This is a tough one I love my bikes. If you really made me choose it would either be my Gravel Bike or my Cross Country Hardtail, as both allow you to go on big epic rides that combine roads and off road trails.

Best ride you’ve ever been on?

There are very few bad bike rides. I’ve got lot of great memories from bike rides, one that really stands out is literally racing a thunder storm down a descent on my mountain bike as it rolled into our valley in the Maritime Alps.

If you could cycle anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I’m lucky enough to have ridden in some great places but I’d love to tick off riding my mountain bike in South America at race like the Andes Pacífico, and do some epic gravel adventures around Norway.

What cycling event do you never miss watching on TV?

The Grand Tours, the Monuments, The Lifetime Grand Prix, the UCI XC, DH and EDR World Cups and World Champs, Redbull Hardline and Redbull Rampage

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while on a bike?

On a riding trip out in France we left our apartment key in a restaurant, and went to a bar, we realised we’d left the key but by the time we realised the restaurant was closed so we had to either break into the apartment or sleep on the street. Luckily we’d left the small bathroom window open, the window was 9ft up from street level and about 7ft high in the bathroom. I drew the short straw and had to scramble through the window from a friends shoulders and then fall headfirst into the bathtub. The next morning we safely retrieved the apartment keys and all was well.

Who’s your cycling hero and why?

On the road it’s got to be Mark Cavendish, he wears his heart on his sleeve and had the self belief to come back and put the work in to get that 35th TDF victory despite the media writing him off as a has been. Chapeau Cav.

Bradley Wiggins also gets a mention for inspiring a generating of Brits to get into cycling (I raced a 3 wheeled Rickshaw 2,500km across India in a Rally painted yellow with Team Wiggo stickers all over it following his TDF win)

On the gravel scene it’s got to be Keegan Swanson, he’s a cool down to earth guy that is dominating the US gravel and marathon XC scene.

On the mountain bike side it’s either Steve Peat, watching him win his world championship in Australia after so many second places definitely brought a tear to my eye. Or Sam Hill who reinvented how you ride a mountain bike fast round corners.

Pauline Ferrand-Prévot also deserves a mention for having been a World Champ in Multiple MTB XC disciplines, Road, Gravel and Cyclocross, winning at the highest level across all these disciplines is mind blowing. Not to mention winning her home Olympics on the mountain bike before switching back to the road and winning the Tour de France Femmes at the first time of asking.

What’s in your repair kit that might surprise us?

If I’m doing an adventure race that’s off the beaten track I’ll take a sailing needle and some dental floss in case I need to sow up a ripped tyre to get me back to camp.

What’s your pre-ride ritual?

I’m not sure if it’s a ritual or OCD but I always check my tyre pressures.

What’s the best piece of cycling advice you’ve ever received?

On the road “it never gets easier you just get faster”

Off road “ if you don’t want to hit a tree/rock/obstacle look past it, not at it”
